Vacation Day 3: Arrive Key West

Day 3

Left Miami around 7:30 a.m. Stopped at Ihop for breakfast. Usually we'd prefer to eat somewhere we can't do at home but there didn't seem to be any options heading out of town. By 8:15 we decided it was time to give up the hunt.

We drove straight thru then to Key West mostly on route 1. We had made a decision before starting the trip that we would save stopping anywhere for the return trip.

We arrived at " The Grand Guesthouse" in Key west about 12:30. Too early to check in and after getting a mini tour via map from the innkeeper, Derek, we headed out on foot to explore. We stopped for ice cream cones which melted almost faster than we could eat them. Dave had a defective cone to boot. We had our picture taken at the southernmost spot and mostly just walked around.

We've checked in now and went through the numerous brochures and flyers of things to do here. It's a cute little B&B.  We have our private patio which may be nice for sitting out later. Shortly we'll be heading out for an early dinner then down to Mallory Square for the sunset festival.

Dinner at Caroline's recommended by Derek. Awesome salads and key lime pie. I had a mango margarita. I've never had one before and figured Key West was a good place to try one.  I was going to wait and have one at Margaritaville - it seemed appropriate  - but this sounded too good to pass up.  It was :)

Sunset was nice although strangely better looking through my sunglasses. Even Dave thought so. I've seen more colorful sunsets at home. The street performers were only so-so as well. The way the whole sunset festivities were described I expected more i guess. Maybe  I was just too tired to appreciate anything tonight. We'll see if tomorrow is better :)

Early night tonight. Neither of us slept well last night. The air conditioner in the hotel room rattled like crazy and then there were the kids running down the hall at 4 am knocking on doors and the planes coming in for landing at the nearby airport.

Looking forward to a full day on the island tomorrow.
